Default Rice

This seemed like the most appropriate forum. If not, mod/Jeffie, please move.

I always seem to have little success with rice. Whether I buy it in the bags, or in the box. I can make it one time and it is very sticky. The next time, it comes out exceptionally dry. Where is the happy-medium?

What brand is recommended for consistent results? I have tried SEVERAL different brands, and no particular one is better than the other. Perhaps I'm missing a step when I am making it. Perhaps rice hates me.

I have considered getting one of those rice cookers, but have seen the price on some of them and stayed away. I don't really eat rice on a frequent basis, so I can't justify spending the money.

Rival 6-cup Rice Cooker - Red (RC61) : Target

there you go.

however, if you like rice and plan on cooking a lot I'd step it up to something like.

Amazon.com: Aroma ARC856 6 Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker: Home & Garden

As far as what rice to use, it all depends on what you want.

Any long grain white rice should turn out like your standard rice, think rice from American style Chinese restaurants. I like using a short starchy rice, I find that it has more flavor and is over all a better rice. It's my personal preference.

for what it's worth, my old 3 cup rice cooker from walmart cost me around 9.99 and cooked rice as well as my nicer rice cooker, the only down side was I couldn't program it to start at a set time, and it wouldn't keep the rice warm once it was done.

Thanks for the input. I guess I was looking in the wrong places for rice cookers. I always saw them for $50-$75 for a little one. Didn't even think to look at Wal-Mart or Target.
