You should have a forum called "What did I just do?" for those dinners that just don't work out, or food combinations that really don't work. I'm trying to use up some old frozen/packaged sticky buns I got at an asian market, and they came out weird and bland. I steamed them, and the outside is gooey, the inside is kinda dry, and the whole thing is bland. So i'm trying different condiments with them to try to improve the flavor. So far, don't try: soya, honey mustard, hoisin, or worcestershire. next up: maple syrup.

Good idea on the forum. =) Were the buns sitting in water? why was the outside gooey? I love Chinese steamed buns! I notice when using my black and decker steamer to steam potatoes they tend to trap water under them, I'm not sure why since there's plenty of holes. in fact I've never had great luck with using streamer built steamers. Because of that I like using a cheap steamer. Big pasta pot, with lid. upside down colinder that's small enough to fit inside the pasta pot. Metal folding basket thingy mah bob (can never remember the name) see picture... As far as steamed buns go.... Red, Yellow, or Black bean paste FTW!

they were frozen sticky buns in a package that had been open for a couple months (I tried microwaving one). I used one of those Metal Folding Basket Thingy Mabob & pot combo like you have a pic of. I think it was just the "cheap frozen-food" nature they had. It was supposed to be red bean, but it tasted like starch.
