| I'm hosting about 10-12 friends for NYE at my place, and I've been thinking about what I want to make/cook. Any suggestions? I don't think a "meal" is in favor... more of a finger foods, apps, some hot stuff here and there... suggestions? | Maryland Crabcake with a twist of Jeff No doubt a winner. Mike's Pasta Salad your own recipe. Imitation crab, crab dip. Make sure you have some good bread to go with it. Garlic,Cheese Bread Do this with either bread sticks (sliced thin about 1/8" thick) Or use baguette and slice it about 1/4" thick. Jalapeno Corn Bread This also sounds nice. Simple cheese quesadillas Easy and quick. Other ideas, Anything shrimp, bacon wrapped scallops, oyster rockefeller. You could also do some chicken wings. Super Simple Mascarpone Dessert This stuff is great. Find a cute little dish to put it in so everyone can easily grab a tiny dish. Just remember, you're not making this for yourself, you're making it for your guest, so don't worry about the butter/cheese content. While you might not like it, your guest will. =) Last edited by jeff; 12-02-2006 at 01:23 PM. |

| Something new and "different" to add: Plantains. The only place I know that carries plantains is walmart for 50c a piece, and possibly some Latino produce stores. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantain They usually come unripe and green. They are best made when fully yellow. For fried plantains, I simply slice both ends off (about 3/4" from the tips), slice through the skin while keeping the plantain whole, cut then into ovals, a pinch of salt, and fry in canola or vegetable oil till they just start turning brown. Let the oil barely cover the plantains in the pan. Take them out and place on paper towl to remove the excess oil. They can be eaten as-is because they make a good snack / finger food but I usually have mine with most rice dishes I make. I'll take some pics this afternoon as I'm making some for lunch. |

| Plantains are sold at most every store in the MD/DC/VA area. slice the plantains 1/4" thick and fry them on both sides, remove them, place them on a plate and using a fork smush them down to about 1/8" thick, and drop back into the fryer to brown. salt with kosher salt Mmmm =) yum. p.s plantains are ripe when they look like VERY BAD bananas nice and blackish. |
